CARBON FOOTPRINT
Carbon Footprint is a measure that expresses in CO2 equivalent the total greenhouse gas emissions associated directly or indirectly with a product or service.
In accordance with the Kyoto Protocol, the greenhouse gases to be included are: carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (Hfcs), sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) and perfluorocarbons (Pfcs).
The measurement of the Carbon Footprint of a product or process requires, in particular, the identification and quantification of the consumption of raw materials and energy in the selected phases of its life cycle.
Carbon Footprint is a tool that allows to measure, handle and communicate GHG connected to product or services.
The Carbon Footprint label is perceived by consumers as an index of quality and sustainability of businesses. The companies, in addition to conducting the analysis and accounting of CO2 emissions, are committed to define a carbon management system aimed at identifying and implementing cost-effective emission reduction interventions, using low-carbon technologies.
Reduction measures may be complemented by measures to neutralise emissions (carbon neutrality), which can be achieved through activities aimed at offsetting emissions by equivalent measures aimed at reducing them by means of economically more efficient or more expendable actions in terms of image (e.g. planting of trees, production of renewable energy, etc.).
Carbon Footprint is applicable to all types of organizations; it is based on and refers to international standards such as those related to the LCA (Environmental Life Cycle Assessment), a methodology (ISO 14040 and ISO 14044) characterized by a new approach that analyzes all processes related to the product and services, from the production phase of raw materials, transport, packaging up to disposal at the end of life.
The methodology analysis is established by the following rules:
- ISO/TS 14067 (Carbon Footprint of products — Requirements and guidelines for quantification and communication)
- PAS 2050 (Specification for the assessment of the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions of goods and services)
- GHG Protocol (Product Life Cycle Accounting and Reporting Standard).
ALENS is able to assist the Customer in the processing of the Carbon Footprint according to ISO/TS 14067 and support him in all the activities necessary to make it as effective as possible.

Benefits
The benefits of CFP are:
-
Implement marketing strategies and communication initiatives;
-
Identify the life-cycle stages of the product that most contribute to the carbon footprint;
-
Define a synthetic indicator of the environmental efficiency of products;
-
Improve products and services (ecodesign);
-
Define ‘sustainable’ business strategies by planning carbon reduction interventions.
FAQ
No, the CFP is a photograph of the current state, it does not provide any indication of the improvement in progress; we have ZEROCARBONTARGET for it, the CFP is still an excellent starting point to know the initial footprint of year that interests us.
Yes, it is possible, but in this case we talk about ‘GHG inventory’, which follows a different regulation.
No, it is impossible, even if many say so. With Gos (electricity with Guarantee of Origin) you can cancel the emissions related to the part of electricity purchased (direct emissions) but not all indirect emissions.
Yes, we are able to provide customer support throughout the country, thanks to our branches in Pavia, Vicenza and Rome – in Italy – , while we are Active on the rest of the market with our branch in Bellinzona, Switzerland.
Yes, our work is “tailor made”. We provide a service built upon the requests of every company.
Each activity is managed by Project Coordinator , who will be the interface of the Customer; that is a technical profile with a wide experience on the topic of interest. We never use call centers, only qualified personnel.
